The Reaper
When I woke up, it was like any other morning. Until it wasnât.
I had left my shade open again. Itâs how Iâve trained myself to rise with the sun. It works better in the warmer months, but itâs better than waking up to the sound of some horrible electronic device. I just get to sleep in a little bit in the winter.
But electronic devices donât always work around me. Iâve never had the latest phone or computer. Mostly because thereâs just something about me that makes them not work reliably, so itâs not worth the investment.
When the sun hits my eyes, I know itâs time to wake up.
I throw the heavy blue quilt off myself and sit up. The room is unusually cold, and I shiver as the frigid air hits my body after the long hours hidden deep under the covers.
My black cat, Juliet, jumped into my lap as I rubbed my eyes and yawned. She seemed a little stressed out. She usually jumps on me when thereâs something going on that she doesnât like.
I rub her behind the ears, which usually calms her a bit, but instead she hissed at me and darted out of the room.
Crazy cat.
I stood up and stretched and reached for the hoodie that was on the chair at the foot of my bed. It was from my alma mater and was emblazoned with some ridiculous Valentine saying on it. I got it at an event my school had years ago. Not because of what the hoodie said on it, but because it was the softest and most comfortable thing Iâve ever worn in my life.
Cold mornings were meant for comfy hoodies and sweatpants.
I hit the bathroom and then headed towards the kitchen.
I could smell the enchanting scent of fresh brewed coffee.
I stopped in my tracks.
I stood frozen in place. I donât ever set my coffee maker to have coffee ready in the mornings. And I live alone. So as wonderful as the scent of fresh brewed coffee is in the morning, the fact that it was coming from my kitchen right now made me shiver harder than I had before I pulled on my hoodie.
I stood there for a few moments and listened. I could hear someone in the kitchen. I contemplated what I should do as I listened to cupboards being opened and closed and the sound of coffee being poured into a cup.
I started to slowly back up. I wanted to get back to my room and see if I could find some sort of a weapon. I was fairly certain I had a baseball bat somewhere in my closet.
Juliet came down the hall and sat in front of me and stared at me. From her vantage point, she could see into the kitchen, but I couldnât until I turned the corner. She looked back and forth from me to whoever was in there and looked at me like she was waiting for an introduction.
âI know youâre there,â a voice said from the kitchen.
